KIEV/WARSAW. Although the transit traffic to western Europe is on the rise, Poland heavily limits the number of available freight transport licenses every year. Traders report that the situation has escalated as 2,000 trucks are stuck at the border waiting to be granted access to Poland.

Due to Poland’s policy of limiting licenses, the haulers from the Ukraine had already used their licenses by the end of August. Traders report that an estimated 2,000 trucks are stuck at the border between the Ukraine and Poland waiting for clearance. For the companies affected the situation can easily become very expensive. This is not only because of the delays but also because of the additional expenses incurred. Haulers report that licences could still be obtained for EUR 400-500 towards the end of last year. This year the rates have, however, surged by 50-70% and in some cases even by 100%.
