Slowly but surely harvest activities are unfolding throughout the country. Some orchards will remain untouched because the expected weak harvest will not cover the expenses of collecting it.

SOFIA. According to local farmers from the Northeast region, for a period of at least a decade, their orchards have not been so full of walnuts as they currently are. Last year, they suffered heavy losses because of adverse weather conditions during the blossoming period of the trees while now, they expect a multifold harvest.

Walnuts: harvest activities will quicken during next week

Where weather conditions allowed it, some farmers in the Northwest region of the country already started collecting the nut, as depending on the variety, some crops are collected earlier than others. Usually, farmers within the Northeast region will start collecting the crop in the end of the second ten-days period of the month while those in the Southeast region are ready to start harvest beginning of next week. Others, whose orchards are situated in higher places, are planning to start in the end of September.

Every coin has two faces though

This season, the losers from earlier adverse weather conditions - frosts, having affected trees during May, will be farmers whose orchards are mainly situated in parts of the Southeast region. Usually, within those regions, farmers grow some of the largest orchards in the country.
