SACRAMENTO/SANTIAGO DE CHILE. US walnut production is currently estimated at 590,000 metric tonnes this season, which is a nominal declined on last year. The high price level at the beginning of the season had to be adjusted after production rose in China.

At the same time, the sales figures range much lower than  last year. The US has shipped 224,709 metric tonnes of walnuts with and without shells since the beginning of the season, which is an 11% decline on last year. While shipments to the US have declined nominally by 3% to 52,181 metric tonnes, overseas shipments have dropped by 13% to 172,529 metric tonnes. By contrast, shipments to Europe have risen by 11% to 68,132 metric tonnes. Shipments to Germany have even surged by 50% to 22,335 metric tonnes.
