REUS/SANTIAGO. While the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council estimated global walnut production for 2022/2023 at 2.65 million mt in May, this figure has now been lifted to 2.69 million mt. India has become the leading export destination for Chile.

INC lifts US estimate

Better than expected conditions in California have prompted the INC to revise production estimates. While the Council initially anticipated a 4% rise in US inshell production to 680,395 mt in May, US production is now expected to rise by 9% to 715,000 mt. Issue is that most growers are reckoning with a better crop than last year as weather conditions turned out to be excellent. Many young orchards are also coming into production this year, which compensates for the slowdown in planting.

China will also reap the profits of very good weather conditions and is expected to witness the sharpest increase in production over the last three years. Although the INC estimates production at 1.4 million mt, it also states that the potential may range closer to 1.5 million mt. Chilenut reports that harvesting for 2022/2023 was completed in May and that production will range more than 10% higher. Production will range higher in all countries this year - except for India.

India is Chile’s leading export destination

In June, Chile managed to step up monthly shipments by 10% as compared with last year. As Chilenut reports the country shipped 28,105 mt of inshell equivalent walnuts overseas in June, whereas exports only reached 25,449 mt in June last year. This was, however, not enough to turn the tide in the current export season which started on 21 March.

Total inshell exports, in fact, range more than 16% lower this season so far, mainly driven by sharp declines in shipments to Turkey, Italy and Germany as well as Peru. India has, by contrast, stepped up purchases in Chile by 20% and has thereby advanced to the leading export destination. Sharp increases have also occurred in shipments the United Arab Emirates, Morocco and China.

Contrary to this, the exports of shelled walnuts have risen by 11.7% to 4,256 mt this season. Spain (830 mt), Germany (656 mt) and Italy (504 mt) are the most important export destinations here. Germany, in fact, imported more shelled walnuts than inshells along with several other countries, most notably the Netherlands (365 mt), Brazil (257 mt) and Ecuador (182 mt).
