Almonds: farmers' association expects record losses

MADRID/SACRAMENTO. The Catalan farmers' association reports high crop losses. In addition to hazelnut and carob trees, almond plantations are also affected. Market players are currently talking about the worst crop result in the last ten years.

Losses of up to 70%

Unfavourable circumstances, in the case of Spanish almonds especially the spring frost in mid-March, caused a yield deficit this year. According to Spanish agricultural media, almond farmers in Catalonia are facing the worst crop in the last ten years, according to the farmers' association. In the region of Lleida, for example, the yield could shrink by up to 70%. Meanwhile, a total drop in production to 10,500 mt cannot be ruled out for Catalonia.
