CHRUDIM. The Czech market for blue poppy seed has not had a smooth start in the new year. Two opposing forces have had their effect on the market.

Things are beginning to simmer
Prices are mostly stable and even minimally cheaper compared to last week. Farmers are not happy about that which is why they are holding back their goods to raise prices by artificially limiting availability.
Trading activity, on the other hand, has been low. Recently there has hardly been any demand anyhow and there is ample supply. An increase in prices is hard to justify.
Depending on quality and supplier Czech prices for blue poppy seed can differ by several cent. First grade blue poppy seed with <10 ppm morphine is available starting from 1,170 EUR/kg FCA Czech Republic. Farmers will use any excuse, however, to allow prices to rise.

Higher Exports
In the beginning of 2016 prices for blue poppy seed declined continuously for several weeks due to high volumes in stock and a good harvest came on top. On the other hand 580 mt more were exported last autumn than in 2015 while at the same time 980 mt less were imported. For farmers this is a good excuse to mark up their prices.
