CHRUDIM. The harvest in the Czech Republic is about to begin in two to three weeks.

This renders prompt deliveries increasingly uninteresting and the holiday season has subdued trading activities. Offers have stabilised at 1,270 EUR/mt FCA Czech Republic.

High-ranging new crop prices

Czech farmers produced about 28,500 mt of poppy last year, acreage reached 35,500 ha and the yield was 0.80 mt/ha. This year, however, the low prices have prompted a reduction in acreage of 10%. Due to adverse weather conditions market players are also expecting a lower yield. A 4-year low (ca. 24,000 mt) in production certainly appears possible. Exact figures should become available as soon as harvesting has started, which will also affect prices. The new crop (premium quality) is currently trading for 1,350 EUR/mt FCA Chrudim.
