Blue poppy seeds: A master plan for destruction

PRAGUE. The Czech Republic certainly knows how to destroy a market. Although conditions were initially ideal for attracting buyers, the market has successfully managed to drive away its customers.

Shoppers’ paradise gone wrong

With the record crops harvested over the last few years the Czech Republic should actually be a paradise for buyers. Especially since prices have tumbled considerably. But demand is surprisingly sluggish clearly indicating that prices have not dropped low enough. And to make matters worse they have remained on a relatively stable level for more than two months.

Suppliers face a dilemma

The crucial problem is that the suppliers are hard pressed. Their dilemma is that although current demand is exceptionally low, it is hardly possible for them to drop their prices. The farmers refuse to go down with their prices. Considering the current supply and demand situation market participants agree that price increases are out of the question.

A change is in sight

This situation could, however, change with the farmers getting ready to sow in March/April. Should they sow considerably less this year they could set a new impulse for the market.
