CHRUDIM. While spot prices on the Czech blue poppy market are easing, farmers and traders are still shying away from making offers for the new crop.

The weather is good, but...

The Czech blue poppy seed market is in a state of conflict. An estimated 40,000 ha have been sown for the coming crop and circumstances could hardly be better at this point. The weather in May was well-disposed towards the producers and brought them plenty of rain and sunshine. Rainfall is also predicted for the coming weekend. Under these conditions, market players hope that the crop this year could reach at least an 11-year high of over 30,000-35,000 metric tonnes.

... it could get worse

At the same time, the losses of the past two years still weigh heavily, when good crops were forecast and prices of less than EUR 2.00 per kg were offered in advance - while the actual market price in the 2018/2019 season climbed to an all-time high of over EUR 4.40 per kg DDP Germany. Farmers and traders are correspondingly cautious with offers for the new 2020 crop, before the poppy plants also put a damper on production expectations in June, which last year was marked by high temperatures and drought.

Compared to last week, the prices for spot purchases have nevertheless declined and are currently at a level of EUR 2.70 per kg FCA Czech Republic and EUR 2.74 per kg DDP Germany.
