SUCRE/MACAO. Following last year’s disappointing crop figures, significantly better Brazil nut crops were announced during last week’s INC Congress. Market players are hoping for falling prices.

Crop volume back above 100,000 mt

Last year, the Brazil nut production had fallen dramatically and prices soared. According to data published during the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council congress in Macao last week, the 2025/26 crop amounted to just 58,200 mt of inshell Brazil nuts, equivalent to around 19,400 mt of Brazil nut kernels. In the 2024/25 season, the yield was still 100,200 mt of inshell Brazil nuts. Market players attribute the lower production to the fires in the Amazon region in early 2025, which hampered harvesting operations.

This year’s yield, however, is said to have been far better. Overall, the 2026/27 crop is estimated at 105,300 mt (35,100 mt shelled kernels), which is a good 80% more than the previous year. Carry-over stocks, at 1,500 mt, are negligible. At 80,100 mt, around 76% of the crop comes from Bolivia, followed by Peru and Brazil with 16,500 mt and 8,700 mt respectively.

Prices for the new crop

Prices for medium-sized Brazil nuts for prompt shipment currently stand at USD 9.90/kg FOB Bolivia, whilst midget nuts are quoted at USD 9.36/kg FOB. Given the improved crop estimates, market players are hoping for a further easing of prices.

EU imports down by 60%

Due to reduced availability, EU imports of Brazil nuts also fell significantly. In the first four months of 2026, EU countries imported a total of 1,445 mt of Brazil nuts worth EUR 17.164 million. Whilst the volume of imports fell by 61% year-on-year, the value declined by only 47.5% due to the marked rise in prices (on average +35% to EUR 11.88/kg). Bolivia remains the most important origin with 1,102 mt (-66% year-on-year), followed by Peru, Brazil and Chile.

The main buyers in the first few months of the new year were the Netherlands (-29.5% to 768 mt) and Germany (-85.5% to 286 mt), as well as Spain (-5.5% to 205 mt).
