Cashews: leftover supplies

NEW DELHI/HO CHI MINH. Only leftover stocks are available for cashews in West Africa. China is buying strongly in Vietnam. In India, the holiday season is driving demand.

Wrapping up the season in West Africa

West Africa is wrapping up the 2026 cashew season. Trading is now mostly limited to leftover stocks and traders are focusing on shipping out the remaining nuts stored in port warehouses.

At the same time, the drop in global crop production is smaller than first expected. The shortfall is around 300,000 mt – better than earlier estimates of 375,000-400,000 mt – and on track to becoming the second-highest harvest season on record, right behind 2025. In the SeGaBi region, the drop is very small compared to last year and Cambodia’s crop is expected to hit 1.0-1.05 million mt, the second largest volume in history.

Prices have stayed strong across producing countries: good-quality nuts (over 43-44 lbs) are selling for USD 1,400/mt or more, while higher-weight ranges (46-52/53 lbs) cost USD 1,500-1,750/mt.

Differing price dynamics in Vietnam

In Vietnam, the market is quiet. Prices have stayed high due to transportation costs. However, the price of processed kernels is not going up as fast as the price of raw cashew nuts (RCN). Because of this, processors are being careful and are only buying what they absolutely need.

China is buying

Prices for W320 cashews from Vietnam are strong because buyers want them right away. Larger sizes such as W240 went up a little because there are fewer volumes available, whereas buying continues. Demand for smaller cashews is moving slower. Looking at different regions, the Middle East is buying strongly, and China is purchasing a lot of larger cashews (WW180, WW210, WW240) because supplies are tight, while Europe is buying less right now. Standard-quality sales to the US and Europe have taking place at the following prices listed, yet only in small volumes.

High demand in India

Kernel prices are strong and steady because people are buying more for the upcoming holidays. This trend is expected to continue for the next couple of weeks. While prices stayed the same in some areas, popular types of kernels cost a little more than last week in other places.

ORDU. In Turkey, the TMO has responded to quality concerns for hazelnuts. Ferrero has adopted a rather unusual approach. Buyers are reacting in totally different manners to the current market situation in Europe and in China. Exports slumped to a twenty-year low in 2025/2026.

CAPE TOWN/CANBERRA. In major producing countries such as South Africa and Australia, the macadamia crop is expected to be significantly better than last year. This is already having an impact on prices. EU imports are on the rise.

TEHRAN. Surprise in July was that Iran’s exports to the United Arab Emirates revived for pistachios, despite the ongoing disruptions. Exports to China have plummeted. Kernel shipments are gaining shares. Expectation is that a sharp decline in production will eat up the anticipated record carry-in supplies in 2026/2027.

MANILA. The coconut market is showing the first signs of a firmer trend: whilst prices for desiccated coconuts remain stable, coconut oil prices are rising. At the same time, attention is increasingly turning to supply for 2027. Transport costs to Europe have fallen recently.
