NEW DELHI. Trouble is not only that production has slumped for chickpeas in India this season. Demand is the bigger problem.

Weak demand in India

Chickpea production has declined by as much as 22-23% this season due to poor weather during sowing. Last year's crop came in at 3.1 million mt and this year's is still estimated at just 2.2-2.3 million mt. Even with sizeable old stocks still sitting in the mandis, there is no real oversupply pressure in Maharashtra, Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh right now. Exporters are actively buying out of the Indore belt in Madhya Pradesh. The bigger issue for local traders has, however, been weak buying demand.
