NEW DELHI. In India, a supply-demand imbalance is starting to show for chickpeas.

Supply-demand imbalance

Large volumes have already been consumed this season so far simply because prices were cheap due to high carry-in supplies. Yet, farmers cut sowing last year, and this season's crop took further damage from adverse weather across Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Sowing was down 15-16% due low prices, and continuous rain then destroyed another 13-14% of what was planted resulting in an overall production decline of 25-26% this season. Last year's crop came in at 3-3.1 million mt and his year's is just estimated at 2.2-2.3 million mt.
