NEW DELHI. In India, the pressure is on for chickpeas. Question is how long this trend will last.

Pressure is on

This season’s sowing of chickpeas remained normal, resulting in an estimated production of 3.0–3.1 million mt. However, abundant carryover stocks from the previous season have created considerable selling pressure. In the domestic market, chickpeas from Maharashtra are currently trading around USD 0.75–0.77/kg, while Indian Mexican varieties are struggling to find buyers even at USD 0.99–1.01/kg. With current prices appearing to have settled, a modest correction could lead to a rebound in the market.
