NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. In India, water shortages are causing uncertainty regarding the upcoming sowing season. At the same time, high carry-over stocks are limiting price rises. In Canada, the market is being supported by persistent rainfall and delayed harvesting.

Water shortage weighs on sowing

An acute water shortage in the Indian growing regions for Kabuli chickpeas could hamper sowing for the coming season unless rainfall sets in very soon. This year’s crop is estimated at 2.2-2.3 million mt, which is 700,000-800,000 mt below last year’s level. Traders in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have scaled back their active sales, whilst deliveries from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka have come to a standstill. Trading on the open market also remains limited.
