Chickpeas: wedding season boosts demand

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. In India, prices for chickpeas have risen slightly, partly because buying interest is increasing shortly before the wedding season. In Canada, market players are monitoring the situation after the Crop Production Show.

Rising demand drives up prices

According to market players, the Indian chickpea market has experienced constant ups and downs in recent weeks. Prices for kabuli chickpeas initially slumped, especially in and around Maharashtra, but also in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, primarily due to the decline in international market prices. However, the recent revival in demand in both the domestic and export markets has led to a slight increase in prices, resulting in a rise in export prices compared to last week.
