Chickpeas: low willingness to sell

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. In India, tight supply is driving chickpea prices ever higher. In Canada, by contrast, attention is turning to the potential quality of the new crop, while prices remain largely stable.

Tight supply supports the market

Despite a severe liquidity crunch, Indian chickpea prices have continued to firm up this week. Producers are holding back stocks at the mandis, whilst supplies in Delhi’s cold stores are reported to be high. At the same time, exporters are buying actively, particularly larger sizes for the international market. Substantial quantities have been exported from the Indore region over the past month and a half. Demand from other countries remains strong, whilst domestic demand is also on the rise.
