The expected higher ending stocks, together with a bumper production this season, are projected to further push down local prices at the beginning of the marketing season. Regional competition is expected to add to the pressure.

SOFIA. Tough regional competition has heavily influenced exported volumes so far in the year. Export activities have been sluggish on a year-to-year basis, reaching 971,607 mt by the 18th of August 2017, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Before the start of the upcoming harvest, remaining stocks will end-up high, although exports will rise somewhat because of uploading ships at ports. By the end of the third week of the month, remaining corn quantities stood at 572,955 mt while carry-over from the previous season was 400,000 mt.

Corn: the jump in projected output could fall in a market sea of low prices

Expectations are for the country to realize at least a 20% higher output this year than it did during last season - 2,226,094 mt. The reason is favorable weather conditions throughout the year, with the exception of already incurred losses from heavy hailstorms that beat some corn fields to the ground about two months ago.

However, farmers from the North regions are already growing nervous of the possibility to release their crops on the market at lower prices. Regional competition matters and exports are on the move as long as prices become more competitive. Local prices, though, have been on the upper side recently!

Favorable weather conditions

Rains already fell in regions from the Southwest of the country, as forecasts are showers to move towards the East and thus fall throughout the country during the following few days. Till the end of August, the general weather forecast is for lower temperatures and occasional rains.
