Exports to EU destinations have stubbornly traced an ascending trend; those outside the Union have suffered.

BULGARIA. During harvest 2017-18, farmers realized much better yields – the aggregate yield was estimated at 9.9% higher than that from the previous harvest – while the quality characteristics of the grain were excellent. There are two factors that contributed to the aforementioned results: the internal one – farmers’ selection of hybrids during sowing and an external one - quite auspicious weather conditions during the year, and indeed, right before harvest.

Corn: shipped volumes to EU markets vs. non-EU markets

Although within the Black sea basin, there is an ample supply of corn, since the beginning of the current marketing season, local exports to the world have recorded an increase of 7.5% on a yearly basis. The pull in the total export rate has come from stronger shipments to the markets of the EU, as by the 9th of March, the country exported 668,857 mt or by 15.73% higher than what it had managed to accomplish by that time last year.

On the other hand, sent quantities to non-EU markets have suffered this season, as regional competition has already influenced the export rate. According to local authorities, shipments to non-EU markets accounted to 117,107 mt, by the end of last week, as on a year-to-year basis the drop is by 23.65%.  The trend is not expected to shoot up later in the season as rivalry within the region has been strong.
