Cranberries: 15% of the crop is wasted

BOSTON. The cranberry market is experiencing a surplus situation, which has put tremendous pressure on US prices over the course of the last year. The USDA has tasked traders and processors with the "disposal" of the surplus stock.

 

The situation in the US
In spite of production figures falling short of expectations in 2017, the US Department of Agriculture is forcing traders to "destroy" 15% of their stocks in a non-commercial manner. Traders purchasing less than 5,670 mt per year or trade in organic cranberries are exempt from this stipulation. Others must either dispose of their share or distribute it by 31 August 2018. Supplies can be donated, composted or diminished on other ways.
