JAHROM. Jahrom county is the production centre for dates in Fars province, which accounts for 13% of Iran’s date output, and the growers here are presently busy pruning. Estimates state that prospects are highly encouraging for this year’s production.

Sustainable production

Suppliers reckon that Fars province has enormous potential. At present the province, however, only accounts for 13% of the country’s national production. And yet, Fars is the second most important producing area for dates after Kerman province. Annual production exceeds 180,000 mt and the area of cultivation spans 33,000 ha. Farmers cultivate 80 different kinds of dates, of which the Shahani variety the most popular as it accounts for around 70% of production. Exporters ship 10% of the dates produced here to Persian Gulf countries, India
