DALIAN. Goji berries were supposed to be ready for shipment in July this year. However, supply remains low and prices have risen in recent weeks.

Prices around USD 200/mt higher

In China, goji berries are usually harvested from June to the end of August. According to market players, comparatively low temperatures in various growing regions this year have delayed the harvest by around two weeks. So far, the fruits are said to be developing well, but it is still too early to give a more accurate crop forecast. Some suppliers had originally expected exports to begin in July this year, but so far supply has been limited. Some suppliers are only quoting prices on request. At the beginning of July, export prices for conventional goji berries, 500 pcs./100 g, stood at USD 6,195/mt CFR Hamburg, which is significantly higher than a few weeks ago.

Speculative transactions were profitable

Meanwhile, stocks from the old crop are no longer available on the market. According to market players, some suppliers failed to stock up sufficiently and are now behind on their contracts. However, others successfully speculated on goji berries and made good profits. This could motivate others to do the same this year.
