MANILA. Dwindling price pressure indicates that the shortage of raw materials in the Philippine desiccated coconut market is slowly easing. Export prices continue to fluctuate within a narrow range; the same applies to coconut oil.

Stable situation in the desiccated coconut market

The international market for desiccated coconuts remains extremely stable, as the experts at T.M. Duché state in their latest report. For several months now, export prices have been fluctuating within a very narrow range. Only minor weekly adjustments can be observed in the Philippine domestic market as well. Demand from the key sales markets of North America and Europe remains constant, especially for standard qualities. Accordingly, processors report consistent business. From the buyers' point of view, the focus is currently less on the price development of desiccated coconuts themselves and more on the cost structure along the supply chain.

Better availability of raw materials

The coconut product market remains calm overall. In Europe, coconut oil prices are fluctuating within a narrow range. In the countries of origin, copra and crude coconut oil markets have recently stabilised, reports T.M. Duché. The supply of copra remains the decisive factor here: even minor disruptions in delivery lead to increased demand from mills. Regional competition for available goods is particularly fierce. At the same time, the current situation points to better raw material availability as stocks are rebuilding ahead of the coming processing season. Falling container freight rates are providing some relief, even though some shipping company decisions continue to cause uncertainty in transport calculations.
