MANILA. As the experts at T.M. Duché point out in their latest report, the price range for Philippine desiccated coconuts is now wider than in recent weeks. The copra supply situation is easing, and freight rates are also continuing to fall.

Supply situation easing

After a prolonged period of stable prices, the price range for desiccated coconut exports has widened. This marks the end of the previously narrow price structure, which indicates unequal stocks and a cautious attitude on the part of buyers, as reported by the experts at T.M. Duché. Prices have also fallen slightly on the domestic market in Manila recently. International demand from the confectionery and bakery industry remains constant, but is sensitive to price changes. The market is therefore likely to remain divided: high-quality products and special packaging will continue to be in demand, while standard goods may come under pressure if supply is sufficient.

The supply situation for copra eased noticeably towards the end of February. Following a previous rally, there were significant price corrections as buyers became more selective and more goods have been available. There are considerable regional differences depending on proximity to oil mills and logistics costs; this brings price differences between the individual islands more into focus, as traders can exploit these differences for business. Overall, the market experts say that the copra market is moving from a tense situation caused by weather conditions to a more balanced environment.

Freight rates continue to fall

In Europe, coconut oil prices have recently been firm with a slight weakening. The price level remains high compared to palm and palm kernel oil. On the Philippine domestic market, both crude and refined coconut oil fell compared to the previous week, while many market players are initially taking a wait-and-see approach.

At the same time, export volumes are declining, while the overall price level remains relatively high. Support is coming from freight rates: according to the Drewry World Container Index, transport from Asia to Europe continued to become cheaper, which improves the reliability of calculations for shipments, even if schedule stability remains an issue, according to T. M. Duché.
