Desiccated coconuts: impressive resilience

MANILA. Although the coconut market continues to face considerable hurdles, prices for desiccated coconuts and coconut oil are proving surprisingly resilient. The Philippine government wants to support the industry.

Desiccated coconut exports have risen

Coconut oil prices in the Philippines remain stable, but are more than twice as high as in the same month last year due to a shortage of goods. Buyers are therefore holding back and demand is currently rather low, according to experts at T.M. Duché. In Europe, coconut oil prices had been quite volatile for quite some time, but have now recovered and are largely stable at USD 2,637-2,797/mt CIF Rotterdam. Although vegetable oil markets are currently under pressure across the board, coconut oil is proving surprisingly resilient.

Prices for desiccated coconuts are also stable, remaining at USD 145-190/lb for the fifth week in a row. This puts desiccated coconuts in stark contrast to other coconut products, which market experts attribute to strong demand on international markets. In May 2025, desiccated coconuts were even the only product to record noticeable growth, according to T.M. Duché, with exports amounting to 14,809 mt. Prices for desiccated coconuts have also risen slightly on the Philippine domestic market.

Financial support

“Century Pacific Food’s announcement of a PHP 4-5 billion capital expenditure program, including significant investments in coconut processing facilities, signals growing confidence in the sector’s long-term prospects”, T.M. Duché said in its latest report. Added to this is the government's goal of planting a total of 100 million new coconut trees by 2028 – both of which should contribute significantly to boosting the industry and restoring the Philippines' position as the world's leading supplier of coconut products.
