MANILA. In the Philippines, competition for available raw materials is fierce, which limits the scope for price reductions. The coconut oil market remains buoyant, and there have also been some changes in copra prices.

Desiccated coconuts quoted at stable levels

Export quotations for desiccated coconuts remained unchanged for the 23rd consecutive week, as reported by market experts at T.M. Duché. On the domestic market in Manila, however, slightly higher prices were recorded. This is due to increased competition for the available raw materials, whilst the situation on the export markets has remained largely unchanged. Owing to the persistently high prices of copra and coconuts, processors see only limited scope for price reductions. For longer-term contracts, buyers prefer to submit offers with a short validity period and to include price adjustment clauses in supply contracts for the wetter season.

Coconut oil and copra prices rise

Once again, the most notable development was seen in the coconut oil market. Export prices rose significantly and continued to be supported by the general trend in vegetable oil markets, higher energy prices and expectations regarding the biodiesel sector. The price differential compared with palm kernel oil narrowed considerably. Philippine prices for crude and refined coconut oil also rose.

Copra prices initially recorded a sharp rise before this trend began to ease again. Overall, the market remains volatile. According to T.M. Duché, prices remain well above the previous month’s levels, but below the exceptionally high levels seen a year ago.

Freight rates fall

Global container freight rates have fallen for the second week running. According to Drewry, the main reasons are weaker demand and additional transport capacity on the Asia-Europe and trans-Pacific routes. At the same time, carriers have announced additional fuel surcharges for August in light of ongoing geopolitical risks and the situation on key shipping routes in the Middle East.
