Dried figs: fighting toxins

AYDIN. Harvesting is underway. Turkey has introduced stricter regulations to prevent ochratoxin and aflatoxin from spreading. These toxins have caused enormous setbacks for exporters.

According to Turkey's meteorological institute temperatures will hit 24-26C (75-79F) in Aydin at night and 41-42C (106-108F) at day. Good news is that the fig trees are in a very good condition. As they are not stressed this year, this may mean less fungal fruit diseases. The drying period will prove essential. Crop size and quality are good so far. According to field inspections conducted by the Aydın Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry the harvest of fresh Sarılop figs started on 29 July and exports as of 30 July. Harvesti
