Flaxseed: Too cold for sowing

LODZ. The persistent winter weather in the growing areas of Russia and Kazakhstan is presenting flaxseed farmers with a problem.

They are still busy preparing the fields for the 2017 crop; however, the cold temperatures are preventing the seeds from germinating. It is still not possible to make any predictions as to whether and to what extent this will affect crop yields.

With a bit of luck, it only means that the harvest will be delayed this coming fall, and the buyers will have to wait a bit longer for their flaxseed. But lower yields are also conceivable; after all, slightly larger acreages are planned for the 2017 crop than last year.

Offers bear too much risk

Until now, these reports are having no influence on the current market prices. The demand is stable and the price level remains unchanged compared to last week. Various Polish traders have already given up on purchases of older commodities directly from the origin, and are covering their needs with prompt requests from local cleaning plants. Most of them are refraining from making offers for the 2017 crop, as the crop situation in Russia and Kazakhstan is still too uncertain. A clearer picture will only be discernible in the upcoming weeks and months.
