MOSCOW/OTTAWA. Opinions are divided over Russia's export duty for flaxseed. Prices have responded to the new crop in Eastern Europe. Projections are somewhat encouraging in Canada. Russia has gained market shares in the EU in the past two months.

Divided opinion of Russian export duty

While flaxseed is one of the few oilseeds for which Russia has desisted from implementing export duties or bans, this is now about to change. As media reports show Russia will introduce a 10% export duty for flaxseed. At present it is unclear when the duty will become effective. According to Mikhail Maltsev, Executive Director of the Oil and Fat Union of Russia, the intention is to boost the competitiveness of the crop in the domestic market as well as processing.
