LODZ. Although Canada was able to win back its position at the top of the world's biggest flaxseed producers, the predictions for the 2017 crop are sobering.

Situation in Canada
With 1,115 million acres, StatsCan estimates the Canadian flaxseed acreage to be around 19% higher than last year, but this estimate still lies a whole 100,000 acres below the five-year average. In the end, however, the yields per hectare will decide whether shortages can be expected in 2017/18 or not. Since the beginning of the season, 226,000 mt of flaxseed were exported from Canada, the export level of the last few years can be maintained without problems thanks to the large surpluses from the 2015 crop.

Situation in Eastern Europe
The East European market is still dealing with increasing commodity prices, but without really having an effect on the export prices or offers for cleaned seeds. In Poland, ex stock prices are at 455-475 EUR/mt and therefore remain unchanged. An additional factor is that in Russia and Kazakhstan, the most important East European growing areas, the acreages are estimated to be respectively 5,000 ha and 13,000 ha larger than last year.
