Ginger: waiting for game changer

BRUSSELS/NEW DELHI. China’s new ginger crop is ready to be shipped and should prove a game changer in 2024. This year’s high prices have impacted buying in Europe.

EU importers spend a record EUR 180 million

EU ginger imports peaked at 125,625 mt in January to November 2021 and have declined since. While imports stood at 99,274 mt in the same period in 2022, they now range 15% lower at 84,512 mt. In terms of value shipments have, by contrast, reached a record EUR 180.208 million (USD 197.340 million), which is 27% up on the EUR 141.956 million (USD 155.451 million) generated in 2022. Average import prices have surged to EUR 2.13/kg (USD 2.33/kg) this year so far.
