Hazelnut kernels: Are rumours disappearing into thin air?

ORDU. It is said that truth is in the eyes of the beholder. Complaints have been cropping up increasingly in Turkey.

The fearful question is posed: Is the quality of the merchandise really that poor?

Apparently, demand has increased very late in the season. As a result, Turkey has exported more than 6,000 mt of hazelnut kernels three weeks in a row now. What is causing frowns, though, are rumours of the poor quality.

No reason for panic
The quality of this year’s crop indeed leaves some to be desired. However, the perception of the problem lies in the eye of the beholder. Traders are urging level-headedness. There are significantly more complaints than usual, although these are not only due to poor quality but also to more intense checks. Among other things, authorities have stepped up their checks, and there has been markedly more merchandise imported. In addition, it is also considered as normal that some of the merchandise is not dried well enough at the beginning of the export season. So there is no reason for panic. Even if high-quality merchandise has become more expensive.

Slight jumps in price
Last week, the demand for hazelnuts increased slighty. Moreover, the weaker Euro exchange rate also caused modest price increases.
