Hazelnuts: first crop estimate and consternation over TMO sales

ORDU/REUS. Preliminary crop estimates are highly encouraging for hazelnuts in Turkey. The TMO has adopted a controversial new sales approach. Market prices are rather surprising. Exports have failed to make a recovery. Global production prospects are good for 2026/2027.

2026 crop to exceed 800,000 mt

Two important events occurred in Turkey this week. Not only did the Black Sea Hazelnut and Products Exporters’ Associations issue the preliminary crop estimate for 2026 but Turkey’s Grain Board, the TMO, also initiated a rather irritating sales approach. The first flower count for the 2026 crop provided the basis for an in-shell crop estimate of 829,239 mt (50% kernel yield) in the Eastern and Western Black Sea regions.
