Hazelnuts: Produce out of old crop distorts quality

ORDU. Farmers are increasingly delivering hazelnuts from the crop 2015 to dealers, which is tainting the reputation of the crop 2016.

Since last year’s production has sustained a loss of quality in the meantime, buyers are getting a wrong impression of this year’s crop. According to reports, that not only led to a rather mixed price level on the hazelnut seed market, but also to first complaints.

Buyers are waiting on sinking prices
Raw hazelnut prices have once again given way, which means that hazelnut farmers will have to say goodbye to dreams of prices of 14-15 TRY/kg, once and for all. They have not given up totally, though. However, there was hardly anyone who reckoned with carry-over stocks of such a volume (175,000 mt), for season 2016/17 there should be a minimum of 600,000 mt of hazelnuts available, which includes the crop 2016. In addition to that, Ferrero is reducing its bidding prices continually. In anticipation of further price declines, many buyers are not covered yet for the new year – exports are still satisfactory, though, with about 7,000 mt per week, until most recently.
