Hazelnuts: INC sparks controversy

ORDU. While Turkey is still in a mode of suspension, controversy has broken loose over the production estimates for hazelnuts in Spain presented at the Nut and Dried Fruit Council Congress in London.

Far cry from reality

Trouble is that the INC issued an impossibly low production estimate of 2,500 mt citing the Association and Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Catalonia as a source. Yet, the Spanish Almond Board Almendrave, the Association of Almond and Hazelnut Exporters of Spain, has issued a clarification that not only states that the Catalonian association does not provide any production estimates but also that a figure of 25,000 mt is more realistic as many young trees are bearing fruit and flowering was very promising.
