DALIAN/KYIV. Ukrainian farmers have harvested the first millet fields. Meanwhile, the import duties on agricultural products from Russia were clearly noticeable in the first month of the 2024/2025 season.

Yields are at 1.6 mt/ha

After a few weeks of stability, prices for Chinese millet are trending downwards. Demand is low, while traders want to dispose of their stocks. Hulled millet is trading at prices of USD 1,220/mt FOB Dalian, while offers for organic millet are at a level of USD 1,300/mt FOB Dalian.

In Ukraine, farmers have already started harvesting. So far, a quantity of 80 mt has been harvested from 50 ha, which corresponds to an average yield of 1.6 mt/ha. Around 69,700 ha have been sown in Ukraine for the 2024/2025 season.

EU imports have halved

In the first month of the 2024/2025 season (July), a total of 2,118 mt of millet was imported into the EU from third countries, a year-on-year decrease of 52.1%. This is partly due to the fact that imports from Ukraine and Russia have fallen significantly. Since 1 July, imports from Russia into the EU have been subject to higher import duties. Imports from China have also fallen, whereas shipments from Argentina have more than doubled in these first weeks of the new season. The main importers in the EU were Germany (-41.7% to 595 mt), Belgium (+5.9% to 570 mt) and Italy (-36.5% to 317 mt).

In the period from September 2023 to May 2024, Germany imported 19,592 mt of millet, an increase of 14.7% compared to the same period last year. Although shipments from Ukraine (-2.6% to 4,688 mt) and Poland (-25.6% to 2,767 mt) declined significantly, higher imports from countries such as France (+20.9% to 4,248 mt), Russia (+179.9% to 3,527 mt) and Hungary (+225.1% to 855 mt) compensated for this deficit.
