BEIJING/KIEV. Recently issued USDA estimates state that global millet production will range at 31.11 million mt this year. This is roughly on par with last year. While production in India is set to rise by more than 2% to 12.80 million mt, production in Niger is expected to decline by more than 1% to 3.80 million mt. Production in China should be similar in size to last year.

Exporters will only set their prices for the new crop once harvesting has started in China next week. The USDA estimates production in China at 2.30 million mt, which is equal in size to last year. Harvesting is, meanwhile, underway in Ukraine and in Belarus. At present, 58,200 mt of millet have been harvested in Ukraine so far and yields range at 2.23 mt/ha. Production is expected to reach 150,000 mt. In Belarus 4,450 mt have been harvested on 1,940 ha so far, which is one third of the area sown.
