Work to pick up in Canada
Rains have delayed harvesting in Canada. As warm and cooler weather is returning work in the fields should, however, pick up soon. According to Rayglen Commodities this is why yields cannot be assessed yet. In August, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, however, raised the estimate to 0.8 mt/ha, which is nominally up on last year. As the area sown has, however, contracted by 40% to 143,000 ha, prodcution will also slump by 40% to 115,000 mt. Although Carryins will lift total supplies to 279,000 mt, quality is an issue. Projection therefore is that average prices will rise by 8% to CAD 925/mt as compared with last year. Yellow mustard seeds are trading at CAD 0.45-0.46/lb EXW.

EU leans closer to Russia
Judging by the anticipated production decline and high prices things should remain difficult for Canada in the EU this year. Russia has, in addition, regained market shares here in recent months. Reports also state that Ukraine and Kazakhastan are reckoning with good crops. Yellow mustard seeds from Eastern Europe are trading at EUR 0.80/kg DDP Germany.
Brazil has, however, been the most important trading partner for the EU in the first two months of the current marketing year. Shipments have, however, slowed in September. Higher import duties have also failed to deter EU importers from buying in Russia. Shipments from Russia to the EU have, in fact, risen by a stunning 879% as compared with the same period last year. While imports from Canada have flatlined, Ukraine has witnessed a 46% slump. Kazakhstan is also a leading supplier and shipments have risen by 23%.
Total EU imports have surged by 76% to 22,705 mt in volume, but only by 8% in value to EUR 12.254 million (USD 14.282 million). Belgium is the leading EU importing member state. Shipments to here have, in fact, risen sharply by 364% to 11,360 mt in the annual comparison. Poland is next in line. Shipments to here are 111% up at 6,080 mt. Germany ranks third with a more moderate increase of 14% to 3,080 mt.
