FORT WORTH. US pecan exports gained in January but still range lower than last year. Inventory levels are higher.

Exports gain in January

As the January Position Report issued by the American Pecan Council shows monthly in-shell basis shipments range 35% lower than last year at 21.6 million pounds as opposed to the 33.5 million pounds recorded in January last year. Main driver is the sharp downturn in in-shell shipments. By contrast, shelled meat exports have risen by 4%, from 2.6 million pounds in January 2025 to 2.7 million pounds in January 2026.

Year-to-date in-shell basis shipments stand 10% lower than last year at 172.6 million pounds. In-shell shipments are also the main culprit here with exports taking a 50% hit to 3.4 million pounds with China as the main export destination. In-shell retail/grocery shipments have even slumped by 64% to 7.8 million pounds as compared with last year. Yet shelled meat retail/grocery shipments have flatlined at 68.8 million pounds. Total shelled meat exports have dipped by 13%.

While Canada has maintained its position as leading export destination for US shelled meats with a 21% rise in shipments, exports to Israel have fallen by 23% and are relatively flat in the Netherlands. North America is the most important export destination (+23% to 3.9 million pounds), followed by Europe (-27% to 3.4 million pounds), the Middle East (-23% to 2.5 million pounds) and Asia (-12% 2.1 million pounds).
