DALIAN. Supplies are becoming more of an issue for pine nuts in China. Traders in Russia and Mongolia are behaving in an unusual way.

Increasing supply shortage in China

Although China’s crop is expected to double on last year’s 30,000 mt to 60,000 mt in 2026/2027 according to the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) projections issued in June, this is a far cry from a bumper crop and supplies certainly are an issue. As Dalian East Dawn Nuts report on social media China is confronted with an increasing supply pressure. Crop observations are discouraging in several producing areas. Trouble is that warm and dry weather conditions have impacted cone formation and kernel growth. Birds and other animals have also consumed a share of the mature cones.

Unusual trade dynamics

On top of this, there are traders in Russia and Mongolia, who are buying pine nut kernels in China to bridge supply gaps and meet existing export commitments. This is rather unusual and surprising given that Russia’s crop is expected to more than triple to 40,000 mt as compared with last year’s 11,000 mt and that output will rise fivefold to an estimated 10,000 mt in Mongolia as compared with the 2,000 mt harvested in 2025/2026 according to INC estimates.

Fresh and traceable kernels in good quality are becoming difficult to obtain. Expectation is that prices will remain firm. Siberica 950 pine nut kernels from China are trading at an elevated EUR 32.00/kg (USD 37.16/kg) FCA Netherlands.
