FRESNO. Under current conditions, the US can expect a record pistachio crop this season. The situation for exports is less positive, with a significant year-on-year decline.

US expects record crop

The 2025 US pistachio crop is progressing very satisfactorily so far, according to AgWest. The crop is likely to be larger than last year, as INC estimates from May also reveal. According to these estimates, US production of unshelled pistachios in the 2025/26 season will be 726,400 mt, which would be a good 44% more than last year and would amount to a record crop. Production is expected to rise further in the coming years.

According to the Administrative Committee for Pistachios, total US stocks, including carry-over stocks from the 2023/24 season, stand at a good 586,975 mt of shelled and unshelled pistachios in the current 2024/25 season; more than 751,000 mt were available at the same time last season. The upcoming record crop should largely make up for the deficit, even if the picture looks different at the global level; according to the INC, global production is expected to be 3.2% lower than in the previous season, mainly due to the massive decline in production in Turkey.

Germany is most important export destination in June

US pistachio exports have plummeted in the 2024/25 season. This was due in no small part to exports to the most important customer country, China, falling by a whopping 47.3% to just 69,215 mt. US shipments to India are also down slightly, and marketing campaigns in both countries are intended to boost buying interest there again. In contrast, exports to Vietnam rose by 50% to 20,913 mt this season. Germany is currently the second largest buyer of US pistachios, with 39,153 mt. Since the start of the season, the US has shipped a total of 286,619 mt of shelled and unshelled pistachios overseas, representing a decline of 24.2% compared to the same period last year. Domestic deliveries amounted to 91,129 mt, 5.7% less than last year.

In June, US pistachio exports recovered slightly. At 4,480 mt, 69.2% more pistachios were shipped to Germany than in the same month last year, making it the most important export destination in June. India (+61.2% to 2,313 mt) and China (-54.5% to 2,048 mt) followed. At 24,279 mt, US shipments in June were 6% above the June 2024 figure.
