Pistachios: frustrated organic producers

ZARANDIEH. Iran’s Markazi province may only rank sixth in terms of the area under cultivation and crop size, but Zarandieh county is the country’s leading producing area for organic pistachios. Turkey will replace Iran as second most important producer in 2022/2023.

Production at risk

The area under pistachio cultivation exceeds 12,000 ha in the Markazi province, of which 75% (8,900 ha) are located in Zarandieh county. Farmers not only grow Akbari, Ahmad Aghaei and Kale Ghucci along Fandghogi pistachios, which are mainly consumed as fresh nuts, but also Ghazvini pistachios, which are used as kernels and slivered pistachios. This year’s production will range at 13,000 mt.

Growers, producers, traders and merchants export around 85% of the nuts produced in Zarandieh mainly to Asia and the Gulf States. Shipments to Eu
