FRANKFURT. The prolonged dry spell has now prompted the potato processing industry in Germany to expect a decline in production. Large potatoes, which are used to make chips, will be particularly difficult to obtain.

 

Potato prices reach 5-year high

The CEO of the Federal Association of the Fruit, Vegetable and Potato Processing Industry (BOGK) reckons that potato production may drop by as much as 40%. To meet demand many processors will be forced to resort to smaller potatoes. Consumers may have to be prepared to pay more for smaller fries. Rainfalls are not likely to occur at any time soon and even if it should rain this may even have an adverse impact on quality.
