Hazelnuts: high risk of damage

ORDU. Although the exporters normally influence the rumour mill at this time of the year by issuing statements on the state of the hazelnut shrubs and prices, things are different this time round. Concerns are being voiced over the development of the shrubs. The gain in value of the Turkish lira has also taken buyers by surprise.

Mysterious rise in value

The Turkish lira gained more than 4% in value. Although there is no explicit explanation for such a rise, the EU’s decision to refrain from issuing sanctions on Turkey over the conflict with Greece on natural gas extrapolations coupled with the decline in value of the euro certainly contributed to the lira’s recovery. Turkey’s Central Bank recently refrained from lifting the key interest rate, which remains at 17%.
