DALIAN. 6,000 USD/mt. The prices for Chinese pumpkin seeds were that high exactly two years ago. Today, this level is hardly conceivable – and still, the market is struggling

 Is -70% not yet enough?

The prices for Chinese pumpkin kernels have dropped by almost 70% since their 5-year high in March 2015. GWS are currently at just 1,820 USD/mt and have therefore dropped to a 10-year low. Many processors consider the price level for Shine Skins to be unsustainably low, and indeed, the prices here have risen minimally since the last week.

Surpluses should reduce price hike

Many suppliers assume that the cultivated area will be smaller than last year, since the farmers want to curb their losses. The purchase interest, particularly also from the European area, continues to be restrained and market players estimate that 30% of the 2016 crop will be carried over into the new 2016/17 season. Many are covered or have reduced their demand in general. For this reason, significant increases in prices cannot be expected in the coming months, even if the cultivated area is smaller.
