Saffron: little incentive to sell legally

TEHRAN. Iran officially only exported 87,476 kg of saffron worth USD 87 million between January and June. High prices are, however, not the only problem.

Volume vs value

Exports in fact slumped by more than 43% in terms of volume on the 154,366 kg shipped overseas between January and June 2021. Issue is that the crop size ranged 50-70% lower in 2021/2022 due last year’s summer drought. This caused world market prices to start to surge by 100% at the end of October. While average export prices still ranged at USD 493/kg in the first half of 2021, they surged to USD 994/kg in the same period this year. TEHRAN. Price movements were mixed in Iran in September with barberries, dates, saffron and raisins showing the most drastic changes in the annual comparison. The market is closely following the price movements for pistachios and raisins. Almonds have taken quite a curious turn. Cumin is also showing some fluctuations.
