NEW DELHI. The first volumes of sesame seeds out of the new crop are slowly trickling onto the market, and the traders are divided by disagreement.

Depending on whom you ask, you are presented with crop estimates of 200,000 mt to 300,000 mt. During the sowing, the prevailing opinion was that a crop was to be expected that could possibly be half that of last year’s, in the worst case. The outlook was decidedly more positive, once the fields were tilled. Official figures, however, are not expected until the end of the month.

Satisfactory buying interest
Indian traders report of good sales figures for the new crop. Predominantly European countries, such as Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and Poland are showing interest. In order to avoid scaring off potential buyers, prices remained unchanged in this week. Depending upon the supplier, though, prices can vary considerably. Sesame seeds, hulled, are offered for 1,42-1,45 USD/kg, and sesame seeds, natural, are at 1.25-1.30 USD/kg CIF Hamburg.
Indian traders do not count on significant inquiries from China for the next two to three months, since warehouses are said to be sufficiently filled still. A few weeks will pass in any case before the new crop is ready for shipping.
