Sesame seeds: strong summer cultivation despite weak demand

NEW DELHI. Sowing is progressing well in the Indian growing regions and the summer crop will be available in the market in a few months. Meanwhile, the latest import data show that Germany imported hardly any sesame seeds from India in January.

Germany lowers January imports from India to 38 mt

Significantly increased imports from countries like China, Uganda, Paraguay and Mozambique prevented a sesame seed deficit last year. In fact, imports actually increased by 3.1% year-on-year. In January 2021, the import volume fell by almost 16% to 3,532 mt, which was not least due to the fact that virtually no Indian sesame seeds were imported in this month.
