Sesame seeds: summer sowing slightly up on last year

NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD. Sowing is progessing well for sesame seeds in India. The area sown is similar in size to last year. Pakistan ranks amongst the top three suppliyng countries in China. India has gained market shares in the EU as recent import statistics show.

Relatively firm prices

According to the latest report released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on 13 March, summer sesame seed sowing has reached 137,000 ha in India so far as compared with the 134,000 ha noted in the same period last year. Sowing has, by contrast, slowed in Gujarat as the area only amounted to 59,461 ha as of 17 March according to the latest report released by the Directorate of Agriculture.
