NEW DELHI. The strong demand and the small summer crop have pushed up prices in India. Traders also expect harvest delays.

 

Demand limits supplies

Exporters in India are delighted with the strong demand from China, the EU and the Middle East. The buying interest in the international market is driving up the prices in India, especially since the summer crop is comparatively small.

The late start to the monsoon in regions such as Gujarat has delayed the sowing for the winter crop, which usually is far larger than the summer crop. Market players expect the new crop to arrive only in four months’ time. A stable demand situation and the possibility of a new tender
